The Origins of Gift Giving
The practice of gift-giving dates back to the start of human civilization. Researchers believe cavemen used to exchange rocks and animal teeth to show their appreciation of others.
Other examples of gift-giving cultures are Native American Tribes in the PNW, Ancient Egyptians, and Ancient Grecians. In Native American culture, there is a gift-giving feast called Potlatch. It is a complex event involving eating, dancing, singing, and the exchange of goods to one another.
Potlatches could mark significant life events such as births, marriages, deaths, or coming-of-age ceremonies. Ultimately, they helped to redistribute wealth, reinforce social hierarchies, and maintain or establish alliances between different clans or tribes.
In Ancient Egyptwhen pharaohs were crowned kings, they were celebrated with copious gifts. When this monumental event took place, it was called their “birthday,” and from this point forward it would be celebrated annually. Egyptians also frequently gave gifts to their Gods to get in their good graces and receive favor in the afterlife.
In Ancient Greece, they also celebrated birthdays, but there were distinct differences in their tradition compared to the Egyptians. Ancient Grecians believed evil spirits try to haunt people each year on their day of birth. To ward off negativity, they would give gifts to their loved ones. Grecians also used gift-giving as a part of diplomatic relations, religious offerings, and even honoring exceptional athletes.
Gift giving is not exclusive to our species either, it’s also prevalent in the animal kingdom. A common example is when you feed the neighborhood cat, sometimes they leave a mouse at your doorstep.
But a really interesting case is dolphins in Queensland. During the pandemic, they were missing their human friends and began delivering bottles, chains, and bits of coral to the shore to encourage social interaction.
